"Valor is stability, not of legs and arms, but of courage and the soul." — Michel de Montaigne
As a service member, veterans have given a significant part of their lives in service to the country. Recognizing their sacrifice, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers comprehensive burial benefits to veterans, ensuring they are honored even in death. This guide provides an overview of what veterans, and their families can expect regarding burial benefits in Southern California's National Cemeteries.
Veterans who were not dishonorably discharged, service members who die on active duty, their spouses, and dependents are eligible for burial in a National Cemetery. This includes a gravesite in any of the VA national cemeteries with available space, opening and closing of the grave, perpetual care, a government headstone, marker, or medallion, a burial flag, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate, at no cost to the family. To confirm eligibility, families should have their discharge documentation (DD Form 214) readily available and prequalify.
Southern California is home to six prestigious National Cemeteries that offer resting places for our veterans:
Located in Riverside, California, it is the third-largest cemetery managed by the National Cemetery Administration. It provides a serene and honorable resting place for many veterans and their families.
Situated in San Diego, it serves as a peaceful final resting place for military veterans and their eligible family members. The cemetery features beautiful landscapes and modern architecture that reflect the dignity of those who served.
Nestled in the city of Los Angeles, this cemetery is among the oldest and most historic sites dedicated to veterans on the West Coast. It offers a rich history along with its services to veterans.
Located in San Diego, this historic cemetery is perched on the Point Loma peninsula, offering stunning views over the Pacific and the city. It's a site of great military significance, hosting numerous veterans of the Navy and Marine Corps.
Situated in Santa Nella, this cemetery serves as a serene resting place amidst the agricultural heartland of California. It accommodates veterans and their families from the central part of the state.
Located near Arvin, this relatively new cemetery provides a dignified and peaceful place of rest for veterans, reflecting the natural beauty of the surrounding Tehachapi Mountains.
The VA provides several key benefits for burials in these cemeteries:
Presidential Memorial Certificate: A certificate signed by the current President, acknowledging the veteran's service.
Burial Flag: A United States flag is provided to drape over the casket or accompany the Urn of the deceased veteran.
Military Funeral Honors: Upon request, veterans are entitled to military funeral honors, which include the folding and presentation of the United States flag and the playing of "Taps."
Burial Space: Veterans are entitled to free burial space in any of the VA national cemeteries, including those in Southern California. This includes a plot for both the veteran and their eligible dependents.
Opening/Closing of the Grave: The VA covers the costs associated with opening and closing the grave, which reduces the financial burden on the family during a challenging time.
The Vault or Grave Liner: Most national cemeteries require a grave liner or vault. The VA provides these at no cost to the veteran, ensuring the structural integrity of the burial site.
Headstone, Marker, or Medallion: Veterans may choose a headstone or marker provided by the VA, or if buried in a private cemetery without a government headstone, they can receive a medallion to attach to their privately purchased headstone, recognizing their service.
At Veterans Legacy Center, we understand the complexities involved in preparing for future burial needs. We assist veterans and their families in completing the pre-need eligibility form, ensuring all documents and information are correctly submitted. Our expertise simplifies this often overwhelming process.
The VA provides many essential services for veterans’ burials, but there are important exclusions that families should plan for in advance. Notably, the VA does not cover the cost of a casket, cremation, or the services of a funeral home, as the VA does not own or operate funeral homes or crematories. At Veterans Legacy Center, we help families understand these limitations and arrange these critical services. Our support ensures that families are not only prepared but also have access to comprehensive care and services that honor the veteran’s memory with dignity.
