Using the VA? Should You Get Medicare Advantage?

July 01, 20265 min read

If you've ever said, "I already use the VA, so why would I need a Medicare Advantage plan?", you're not alone.

In fact, it's one of the most common questions veterans ask when they become eligible for Medicare.

The answer is that it depends on how you receive your healthcare and what benefits are most important to you.

VA health care and Medicare are two completely separate systems. While many veterans are satisfied using the VA for most of their care, others discover that adding a Medicare Advantage plan gives them more flexibility, access to additional benefits, and coverage when they need care outside the VA.

How VA Health Care Works

VA health care provides eligible veterans with access to medical services through VA hospitals, clinics, and approved community care providers.

Depending on your priority group, disability rating, income, and service history, your costs and available benefits may vary. Many veterans receive excellent care through the VA and continue using it for primary care, specialists, prescriptions, and ongoing treatment.

However, it's important to remember that VA health care is not the same as Medicare.

Generally speaking, VA benefits only pay for care that is authorized through the VA system. If you receive treatment from a civilian doctor or hospital that isn't approved by the VA, you may be responsible for the cost unless another insurance plan covers the service.

This is one of the main reasons many veterans enroll in Medicare when they become eligible—even if they intend to continue using the VA.

What Does Medicare Advantage Add?

A Medicare Advantage plan doesn't replace your VA health care.

Instead, it can provide another way to receive care when you need it.

Depending on the plan available in your area, a Medicare Advantage plan may include benefits such as:

  • Medical care from civilian doctors and hospitals

  • Preventive care outside the VA

  • Dental benefits

  • Vision coverage

  • Hearing exams and hearing aid allowances

  • Prescription drug coverage (when appropriate)

  • Over-the-counter (OTC) allowances

  • Part B premium givebacks $$$

  • Transportation benefits

  • Fitness memberships such as SilverSneakers® or similar programs

These benefits vary by plan and county, but many veterans appreciate having options if they are traveling, unable to reach a VA facility quickly, or simply prefer seeing a local provider.

For example, a veteran may continue receiving most of their care through the VA while using their Medicare Advantage plan for routine dental cleanings, vision exams, hearing benefits, or an unexpected visit to a local urgent care clinic.

This flexibility is one reason many veterans choose to carry both types of coverage.

When a Medicare Advantage Plan Makes Sense

Every veteran's situation is different, but a Medicare Advantage plan may be worth considering if you:

  • Want dental, vision, or hearing benefits that the VA may not provide in your specific situation.

  • Travel frequently or spend part of the year away from your local VA facility.

  • Want the flexibility to see civilian providers within a plan's network.

  • Prefer having access to nearby hospitals during emergencies.

  • Would like additional benefits such as OTC allowances, transportation, or fitness memberships.

  • Want another healthcare option if your needs change over time.

Many veterans tell us they rarely use anything except the VA—until something unexpected happens.

Having another source of coverage can provide additional peace of mind.

It's also important to understand that enrolling in a Medicare Advantage plan does not cause you to lose your VA health care benefits. The two programs operate independently.

When It Might Not Make Sense

A Medicare Advantage plan isn't the right choice for everyone.

If you're completely satisfied with your VA care, rarely seek treatment outside the VA, and don't need additional benefits like dental or vision, you may decide that your current coverage already meets your needs.

Military retirees with TRICARE For Life also have additional considerations because TRICARE works differently than standard VA health care.

How to Decide

The best Medicare choice depends on your doctors, prescriptions, travel habits, VA eligibility, and the plans available where you live.

Rather than assuming every veteran should—or shouldn't—enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, it's better to review your individual situation.

At Veterans Legacy Center, we help veterans throughout California compare their options, understand how Medicare works alongside VA health care, and determine whether a Medicare Advantage plan fits their needs.
